BENEFITS OF YOGA IN TODAY’S BUSY LIFESTYLE | Urusha Karki : “YOGA” or “YOG” is a Sanskrit word whose literal meaning is that ‘to unite’, ‘to combine’ or ‘to have a connection (contact)’ with the supreme or divine power. Yoga is considered as one of the six Darshans of Hindu philosophy. The word Yoga had been in use from the ancient time in the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Geeta, the Purands and other holy books of the Hindus and it is seen that later on it was spread to Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and in other religions also. According to Maharishi Patanjali, “Yoga essentially consists of meditative practices culminating in attaining a state of consciousness free from all modes of active or discursive thought, and of eventually attaining a state where consciousness is unaware of any object external to itself, that is, is only aware of its own nature as consciousness unmixed with any other object.”

The eight-limbed concept of Maharishi Patanjali mentions the following as the Sutras of Yoga: Yama(abstentions),Niyama(observancesorrules),Asana(position),Pranayama(controlling breath),Pratyahara(abstraction),Dharana(concentration),Dhyana(meditation)and Samadhi(liberation).  Yoga can be mainly classified into four types and they are:-Mantra Yoga, Laya Yoga, Hatha Yoga and Raj Yoga. Broadly we can say that “Yoga” is the practice of meditation and self-control intended to produce mystical experience and the union of the individual soul with the universal spirit by controlling breathing and holding body positions by which one can get the physical, mental and spiritual benefits.
