Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is have various consequences on women health. The infertility issue is one of the major burden that women have to face. In most of the society, infertile women has to face social stigma. The woman has to go through emotional as well as psychological drain. It also causes stress among the couples, family and relatives. Women with PCOS may find it hard to deal with their problems.  Similarly, every woman is concerned about their appearances. But problems such as excessive hair growth on face and body and acne can cause psychological stress on women. This can lower the self-esteem among women with PCOS. Further, the women with PCOS are often insulin resistant which increases the risk for type 2 diabetes.  The women with PCOS are more prone to diabetes in early age. They are also in risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and some may even develop cancer in ovary or uterus.

Causes of PCOS

The exact causes of PCOS is unknown but family history of PCOS may be a factor. Being overweight, lack of physical activity and unhealthy diets are the risk factors of PCOS. However, early diagnosis and treatment of PCOS can help to prevent the complications. The diagnosis of PCOS is done through the physical examinations of the facial and body hair, laboratory test to check the blood sugar, insulin levels and even a pelvic ultrasound to detect the cyst in ovaries. The key treatment of PCOS is regular physical activity, eating healthy foods and weight control. Some women may be prescribed to take birth control pills to regulate their menstrual cycles.

Lack of awareness about PCOS and its symptoms lead to late diagnosis. So, it is necessary to sensitize people about PCOS and its complications through television, social media, newspapers, pamphlets etc for its early diagnosis and prompt treatment.
